There are many factors that go into choosing the right carpeting for your home. Some of the most important are how it will be used, how it will be maintained, how long before you expect to replace it, how it may affect the indoor air quality in your home, and how much you are able or willing to invest. Cut pile – In this type of construction the loops are cut, leaving individual yarn tufts. This is one of today's most popular constructions. The level of durability offered in a particular cut pile carpet is achieved with the type of fiber, density, and twist.
The following are some examples of styles of cut pile carpet
Plush/Velvet Saxony: this style has smooth and level appearance. It will give off a more formal look and has varying degrees if how fine the tips of the yarns are. most often used in formal living areas.
Twist Saxony: This style of cut pile carpet is relatively flat and smooth, but has a more twisted appearance to the tufts offering reduced visibility of vacuum marks and footprints as well as a more casual appearance than the plush or velvet Saxony
Frieze: In this cut pile carpet style, the yarns are extremely twisted, offering a "curly" appearance and a more textured surface. This will minimize footprints and vacuum marks even more than the twist Saxony, and offers a very casual look and feel as well as superior ability to disguise seams..
Level loop pile: In this type of carpeting the loops are the same height, creating an informal look. This construction performs well even in high-traffic areas. The closed loop construction helps to disguise traffic patterns and virtually eliminates vacuum marks and footprints. level loop pile carpeting is usually either in the Berber family or in commercial carpets
Multi-level loop pile: This type is basically the same as the
level loop pile with the exception that is has two or three
different pile heights offering texture or in many cases a defined
patterned look. One advantage over a level loop is that its deep
texture often helps to disguise traffic patterns better.
Cut and loop pile: This type is a combination of cut and looped yarns;
recent trends have many more carpets of this type becoming
available. Sometimes also referred to as cut and uncut. offers many
fashion and design options and offers one the ability to express
their individuality in a particular room through the use of bold
designs. especially when the cut and loop is also a patterned
carpet.
Prints – Prints offer nearly endless design options and are
usually flat with a "picture" type pattern as opposed to textured.

colors.

In addition to construction you should look at fiber content. Carpet fibers are what make up the yarn that makes up the carpet. Density is also important in determining overall performance and should be considered carefully.
