Commercial flooring is a flooring category that breeds much confusion for both consumers and industry insiders. We like to think of the category of commercial floors as a two part category. We will help you understand and sort through the confusion to make a good choice.
The first and most common to consumers is what we like to categorize as main street commercial flooring. This is a group of products that are produced with the intent of performing in light commercial applications. such as your typical "main street" commercial settings like....
Your doctors office
your dentists office
your favorite local restaurant or pub
your favorite other local retailer
Usually these products are of a construction and fiber content designed to take heavy foot traffic (usually we use a gauge of 25-250 people per day) Many times this will be carpet, but the family does also include some hard surface options.
The second and least thought of is contract flooring work. This is a specialized type of flooring that requires a whole different set of products, rules, guidelines, and frankly both specialized project managers (salespeople) and installation crews.
We will not spend much time on this type here because very few consumers ever have cause to need this information. it is covered more in depth in the architect, designer, and facilities managers purchasing agents members sections as those are the people who use this information most. We like to class these products as Severe traffic products (usually we use a gauge of 250 to many thousands people per day)
But examples of these projects could be...
Your nearest major hospital/medical facility
Your child's school
Your favorite shopping mall (common areas)
Your local airport
Your state capital's governmental building....
Ok you get the idea...right?
So lets talk about the main street commercial flooring and how it can be used. There can easily be some misinformation given when looking at these products.

know and understand construction and what it means.

is it a level loop

is it a pattern
know how the room will be used and if the product you are considering can take the use
know and understand the care and cleaning of this commercial flooring
know if there are any special considerations for care
They can literally be used anywhere, some good examples of places and applications we have used commercial flooring in residential homes are...
heavy use family/TV room
sunroom/4 season or sleeping porch
playroom
weight/exercise rooms
den/home office
kitchen
utility/laundry rooms
bonus room
Commercial carpet is the most commonly used commercial floor in homes. Occasionally rubber flooring is being used in exercise/weight rooms for example, commercial sheet vinyl and of course commercial grade ceramic tile are sometimes used as well.
