Commercial flooring installation

Commercial flooring installation can be similar or quite different from residential flooring installation. Many of the commercial flooring products need to have special installation considerations. When these products are engineered they are designed for use in commercial applications which often have different jobsite conditions as well as different use levels than in residential applications. The flooring professor knows these differences and how they may or may not effect your home flooring project. In this section we will help you understand commercial flooring installation methods.

Installing commercial carpet

In most applications commercial carpets are glued direct to the subfloor without an under padding. However, as long as the product has an action back it could be stretched over an appropriate padding. This will sometimes be desirable when using commercial carpet in a home. Another method of commercial carpet installation is what is known as double stick. This is where a special high density commercial pad is glued to the subfloor, and then the carpet is glued to the pad. This can be a method to have a pad under a commercial carpet without an action back.

Installing commercial vinyl flooring

Commercial flooring installation of vinyl floors is very similar to that of residential vinyl installation. However, commercial vinyl products can include genuine linoleum, as well as other homogenous vinyl products that sometimes require heat welding methods to bond seams. Sometimes commercial grade vinyl products can also be very heavy and brittle and require special handling as well as cutting and seaming techniques. In general with exception of the differences shown above most vinyl will be glued to a clean acceptable substrate. this can be concrete plywood, or a suitable approved underlayment. Generally these techniques will also apply to installing other types of vinyl products such as solid vinyl tile, vinyl composition tile, solid vinyl plank (that looks like wood) and most others.

Installing commercial rubber flooring

This is a general installation method that is accepted for ALL rubber flooring commercial or otherwise, at this point rubber flooring products install similarly and are fast crossing over into the residential market. none the less they install the same as you will find in our rubber flooring installation section.

Installing commercial wood flooring

In most cases commercial flooring installation of wood floors is the same as installing wood flooring in a residential application. The one thing to recognize is that in most cases a TRUE commercial wood floor (of the pre-finished variety) is an engineered floor and will install just as you will find in our engineered wood flooring installation section. The solid wood floors used commercially are generally not pre finished and will install similarly to "finish on site wood flooring" using a high quality commercial finish product. a "regular per finished wood floor is not rated for commercial use and should only be used with caution in "light" commercial applications.

Installing commercial tile (ceramic or porcelain)

Basically commercial tile installation is similar to residential tile installation when used in a home. The main differences may be a heavier duty transition trim, the use of expansion joints in large commercial applications, and the occasional use of different setting materials and or epoxy grouts that as a rule are not used residentially.
