You need to consider your cork floor installation after becoming the proud owner of a new cork floor. First we have to determine what kind of cork floor you purchased so be sure and have the manufacturer information and product number (perhaps have the box handy). Then we need to know if you have cork planks (also known as cork floating floor) or cork tiles as the installation techniques are different on each.
if you have not yet purchased your new cork floor you may prefer to visit our general installation page which is not as in depth and should give you the basics of what is necessary to know before your purchase. If you have already purchased your floor (we assume with our help and guidance so you are sure to have bought the "right" cork floor then...

First Things First
Subfloor preparation is everything! so spend the time that is necessary to get it right. Did I say that loud enough? Subfloor preparation is everything in ANY floor installation! DO NOT skimp in this area it will make or break your job.
For your convenience you may download our helpful basic subfloor preparation PDF and print off a hard copy.
Here is a basic checklist that holds true for most manufacturers:
What kind of subfloor will you be installing over?
concrete
plywood
oriented strand board
particle board
aged plank boards
gypcrete
existing flooring (what kind)
ceramic tile
sheet vinyl
linoleum
vinyl tile
hardwood
vct
other flooring
Other subfloor material
What level Is the floor on in proportion to the earth (ground level)
On grade (at ground level, ie: cement slab)
Below grade (below ground level ie: basement, lower level)
Above grade (above ground level)
View substrate carefully and look for overall flatness. use a straightedge about 10 feet long if you can (or as close as possible)
This tolerance will vary between manufacturers but a good rule of thumb is 3/16" in ten feet.
Check substrate for excessive moisture Using a moisture test.
a calcium chloride test (which is accurate and recommended)
Poor mans moisture test (less accurate and last resort)
Inspect substrate for cracks in concrete, excessive spaces between boards on wood substrate. Also look for gouges and low spots that are large enough to affect the manufacturers tolerances.
Some additional considerations in cork floor installation are the tools needed. most of the tools you will need you probably have around the house. We recommend you familiarize yourself with cork flooring care and cleaning after you complete your cork floor installation.
