Floor tile is not only durable, but versatile. The variety of styles, textures, colors, even shapes and sizes that are available today is mind boggling. If you were to close your eyes and imagine any configuration of floor tile in your home it is likely that it can be recreated and made into reality.
We have over the years installed countless ceramic tile kitchen floors. although bathrooms and entrys are even more popular areas to use ceramic floor tiles. I can remember years back when the tiny little 1"x1" tiles were the in thing for bathroom floors. That certainly has evolved and the tiles have become larger and larger over time. On some bathroom design tile jobs we still do mosaics (small tiles such as 1"x1" or 2"x2", etc) on occasion, but it is not near as common as it once was.
Tile is also commonly used on both bathroom and kitchen backsplashes, Walls in bathrooms, bathroom and Kitchen counter top applications, numerous commercial wall and counter areas. Shower tile is very popular as well. We will cover these non floor tile applications more in depth in other areas of this website. For now let's stay focused on flooring tile.
There are a variety of floor tile types. The three most commonly used in most tile projects are:
Ceramic floor tile - ceramic tile flooring is probably the most well known and most commonly used type for the average project. It offers great durability as well as a wide variety of color choices, textures, styles, sizes and an almost infinite pricing range.
Porcelain floor tile - Porcelain tile is becoming more popular almost daily for residential tile jobs. Manufacturers are introducing new options constantly. this type of tile flooring has a porcelain "body" and for residential applications is still usually glazed and very easy to clean and maintain. There are more than one type of Porcelain tile and you should know the differences before you buy. more information on this is available in our porcelain tiles section.
Stone Tile - Stone tile is an all natural product taken directly from quarries. it requires special installation considerations, different maintenance and care procedures from glazed tiles, and will usually have a substantially higher cost than traditional ceramic tiles. However, properly installed and maintained stone tile flooring will potentially last more than your lifetime. It also adds value and class to any tile installation. You should however be well educated on the pros and cons of stone tile before you buy. This information can be studies in our Natural Stone tile section.
Other Types of Tile Flooring - In addition to these widely accepted types of tile, some projects will use (usually as accents) Stainless steel tile, copper tile, mural tile, border tile, glass tile, or other decorative tile.
In addition there are mexican tile, saltillo tile, designer tile, and within some of the above categories one may find subcategories such as slate tile, travertine tiles, marble tiles, limestone tiles, granite tile, other metal tile, unglazed porcelain tiles, unglazed quarry tile and others... as you can see the tile options are plentiful, We hope you will spend some quality time with us to thoroughly learn the differences before investing in a tile project.
Laying tile can be tedious and time consuming work, there are many accepted installation techniques, and in most cases there is a reason for that. The job conditions, skill level of the installer (maybe you!) the products being used, and the expected usage after installation will all contribute to the final installation methods. We will go much more in depth into the different ways of laying tile for your tile flooring project in our how to install tile flooring section.
Cleaning ceramic tile floor the right way has been a topic of debate for many years. many people complain about cleaning tile grout, but if you take proper care of your tile and grout, it is really not so difficult. Many others swear that cleaning tile floor is easy. In any case, there are many theories on how to clean tile floor. We will offer you logical, thorough information that will assist you in sorting through this sea of conflicting information in our ceramic tile floor care section.
