The already overwhelming and rapidly growing list of flooring brands can be confusing and difficult to understand for the average consumer. In this section the flooring professor will try to help you understand the brands of flooring as well as offer a comprehensive list of many brands and extended resources for researching each.
A brand is exactly that a brand. What do we mean by this? Simply put, when you go into your local store or browse a reputable online flooring retailer (which we have screened and rated for you) and you see a recognized brand (let's use Bruce hardwood as an example). Bruce is a brand that is actually owned by Armstrong (another recognized brand) that may or may not be produced in a factory that is owned and run by Bruce.
Are you confused yet?....ok let's talk about carpet. let's say you go into a local carpet store and see a recognized brand such as Lees carpet perhaps. Lees Brand for example is owned by the retailer (carpet one, which is a retail brand) and the product showing the lees brand on the label is the same product being produced under it's own master brand (such as Shaw or Mohawk)...Ok Now are you thoroughly confused?
Although the consolidation of flooring brands is rapidly changing the face of the flooring industry the basics are this, there are factories that actually produce the products (often referred to as mills) many of these factories produce product (or do a portion of the production) on behalf several different brands. Some of this has been gobbled up in the consolidation mostly by giants such as Mohawk, Shaw, Armstrong, etc...
Another thing about brands is that some major players will even have the identical products produced under more than one brand name. Also understand that most brands have a wide range of actually qualities within their brand so you can not assume that a brand name always represents premium quality!
Here is a partial listing of some of the major brands of flooring products (most of which we work with regularly)
