Just as in most other industries in recent years the flooring industry has seen a trend toward the consolidation of companies. Flooring consolidation is happening rapidly. For example just a decade ago there were several possibly even hundreds of independent carpet mills yet today an estimated 85% of the carpet brands are owned and/or marketed by three major players, you will see all three referenced throughout this site often.
Shaw Industries (a division of Berkshire Hathaway) is one of the
major players offering brands such as Philadelphia, Cabin craft, Queen,
Sutton, Cumberland, Home foundations, Tuftex, as well as others.
Shaw even distributes hard surface products such as laminate floors, wood
floors and ceramic tile.
Beaulieu is another company with brands
such as Hollytex, Coronet, Laura Ashley, and others.
And then there is
Mohawk This company has been around for over a century and they are
playing for keeps, in the world of carpeting they own Brands such as
Galaxy, Horizon, Wunda weve, Custom weve, Karastan, Aladdin, World,
Portico and more. And as if that weren't enough a few years ago they
purchased ceramic tile manufacturing giants American Olean, and Dal tile,
and more recently Purchased a huge production company for laminate
flooring featuring the rapidly growing Quik step brand. They even
are the largest distributor of Congoleum products!
It is an exiting time as our industry is rapidly
changing and as it does it will only get better and offer more exiting and
innovative product options for consumers!
