For the most part garage floors are left plain old concrete, some people will choose to seal the concrete. This can be done with a concrete sealer that can be purchased from a coatings professional. Others will use "Paint" to cover a garage floor, and a few will use high quality epoxy paint. These methods are the traditional finishes that have been chosen. But today there are many more options! What are they?
Textured epoxy coatings- the new textured epoxy garage floor coatings can be sprayed on and leave a durable and beautiful finish to your floor. There are many varieties of color and texture available. This is usually offered by an epoxy coatings contractor, and generally is not a do-it-yourself- flooring project.
Vinyl composition tile- vinyl composition tile (also known as vct) can be used. To do so and keep it looking nice will take a fair amount of maintenance though. Several coats of industrial wax will need to be applied, and regular hand mopping, buffing, stripping, and re-waxing will be required.
garage carpet- YES there is garage flooring made of carpet. Shaw industries produces a product made for garage floors, it is made from a tough synthetic fiber that resists dirt, oil and grease and is attached to a special backing that does not allow stains to seep through to the concrete. This backing is also tacky and holds the carpet down flat on the floor.
rubber tiles- traditional rubber tiles can be used to cover your garage floor, the one issue here is like the vct this will look great but require quite a bit of maintenance.
rolled matting- This is a great garage flooring option that keeps a clean fresh look in any garage application. It comes in many widths, can be rolled out easily, and once installed can simply be broomed, wet mopped, or hosed off for VERY easy cleaning!!
As you can see there are several options for garage flooring. Keep in mind how the area will be used and your climate as well as the time you have to keep it looking sharp before choosing which type of garage flooring you will install. If you are looking to give your garage that finished look and spruce it up like additional living space the flooring you choose can set the tone. Garage flooring is just the beginning and you can find other great garage finishing ideas on the web or at your local garage accessories retailer. Making garages have that finished look has become a rapidly growing trend and we suspect it will continue which will likely expand the offerings made for garage flooring as well!
