We are often asked how to clean vinyl floor. As Vinyl flooring continues to evolve through new technologies, this answer keeps changing, We recommend you stay up to date through one of our consumer updating options. (free subscription to EZ floor facts ezine, buy our Flooring care guide or our Resilient floor care guide, or subscribe to lifetime care & maintenance updates from your local flooring professor dealer partner store.) IN any case for now we will give you some basic information on how to clean vinyl floor that is current at the time of this page publication.
Frequently use a broom or a vacuum WITHOUT any rotating bar to remove dust, sand, and other particles that accumulate daily. Again be sure not to use a vacuum with a beater bar as it may scratch your floor. If you have trouble getting into the tough spots like the edges at baseboards, etc... the attachments on your canister vac can be helpful.
Regularly mop the floor with clean warm water. Rinse the floor thoroughly with fresh clean water. If water alone does not clean the surface, We suggest you use cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer (or another Quality brand of vinyl floor cleaning product available through a knowledgeable and "reputable" flooring retailer). * Note that does NOT mean a big box retailer or the grocery store! there are many products you may "think" are good for your floor that are NOT.
If you need further help with this contact us.
If you are unsure or are in doubt, until you can contact us for the answer try using one tablespoon of clear ammonia to one quart of lukewarm water. or the same formula with white vinegar works well also.
It is also a good practice to think about preventing as much dirt from accumulating on your floor by Placing walk-off mats or rugs at every outside entry to your room. This will help keep sand and grit from being tracked on to your vinyl floor. ***CAUTION*** Be sure to avoid using rubber-backed mats or rugs. They will likely damage and/or potentially discolor your floor. Look to find rugs or mats that are made for vinyl flooring, these will likely be available from your premium value professional flooring supplier
If you purchased your floor from one of our network of professionals and have a PVC vinyl floor you were likely informed that you should consider placing 2-3 coats of the manufacturer’s recommended floor polish on the floor immediately. This is because any vinyl floor with a PVC wear layer will show scuffs, scratches and other marks very easily. By adding the coats of floor polish you will give your new vinyl floor much easier to clean and maintain. You also likely were offered the opportunity to purchase the manufacturers recommended polish. If you did not (shame on you!) just contact us and we will help.
We would also like to remind you to never use abrasive cleaners, soaps, paste waxes, or solvents on your vinyl floor. Use only a manufacturer’s recommended floor polish to restore your vinyl floor to its original gloss level.
For spots or spills, you should try to wipe them up immediately and use a clean white cloth to apply your cleaner. be sure you are using a "no rinse" cleaner. For more detailed help on how to clean vinyl floor consult your floor care guide or our resilient flooring care guide. Please also remember this page is just an overview and there are different variations of how to clean vinyl floor depending on the type of finish that was applied at the manufacturer.
