The laminate flooring segment of the flooring market is here to stay. But do not try to purchase laminate floors without knowing exactly what to look for. We are here to help you know what to ask, what to look for, and what to buy when you buy laminate flooring.
Consumers often come into stores and ask for "pergo" when they are looking for a laminate floor. This is because of great brand marketing similar to how we all use "kleenex" for facial tissue, or "band-aid" for an adhesive bandage. BEWARE it does NOT mean pergo is the BEST as a matter of fact we would say it is a good quality brand that is better than many but inferior to some that are available today.
Laminate flooring is a man made flooring product that consists of a core (usually medium density fiber type material), a backing (as a balancer), and a top layer of "laminate" (which consists of a picture compressed within several layers of what we will call the "finish layer." It is in layman's terms considered a plastic product with a wood based core.
A few short years ago laminate was a hot seller, but a dismal performer, the product category has gone through some serious growing pains. But today as long as one understands what it's limitations are it is a top notch performer when used in applications for which it was intended.
From a design standpoint laminate has really evolved. With today's technology the quality or realness of the appearance is far greater than just a few years ago. with the addition of individual plank options and texture capabilities some of the new generation of products you have to touch to know it is not a wood floor.
All flooring products take daily abuse and each have their own advantages and disadvantages. The laminate group is known for its tough top layer. It is very scratch resistant (but can be scratched). and has superior "impact resistance" to other flooring products. Laminate flooring also has superior cleanability to most other flooring products.
This can get very confusing. One of the reasons we are here is because we see every day how many flooring sales personnel are under trained or misinformed and then pass that on to the consumer which results in a high level of customer dissatisfaction in our industry. It is crucial that you know in detail what you are asking or looking for when shopping for a laminate flooring product. Do not buy until you get the questions answered with accurate information. We have spent over two years putting together a comprehensive library of flooring buyers guides to assist you in all of your flooring purchases.
