Genuine linoleum flooring installation is somewhat difficult, and in may cases should be left to the professionals. The flooring professor will help you to get a basic understanding of the linoleum flooring installation procedure so that you can be sure that whomever you have install your new floor does the job properly. There may be a few of you that may wish to tackle the installation yourself and this is possible especially if there are no seams in the job and it is a small area. However, in most cases we recommend you hire a qualified expert linoleum installation technician to install your floor.
Basic installation techniques for linoleum floors are very similar to that of sheet vinyl products. When installing linoleum sheet flooring there are often seams involved and they in most cases will need to be heat welded. This is a process that requires special installation equipment that only a few real linoleum flooring installation specialists own.
There are alternatives available on a limited basis such as linoleum tiles which will not require heat welding and will lend themselves more easily to a do it yourself linoleum flooring installation. Another alternative is a newer product by forbo under the marmoleum brand that is a floating floor that "clicks" together and can easily be installed by the average homeowner. for more information on linoleum click flooring linoleum tiles, or any other linoleum alternatives please consult our linoleum types page.
ok so the basics that you should look for are similar to sheet vinyl and are as follows:
subflooring should begin flat and clean and free of debris, oils, or other residues. if you are installing on a concrete floor it should also pass a basic moisture test and alkalinity (ph) test to ensure good adhesion. If you are installing on a wood substrate it should be sound flat and of a plywood type, if it is not a smooth quality plywood an acceptable 1/4 plywood underlayment will need to be installed first.
once the subfloor is properly prepared then your linoleum can be layed out in the space it will be installed. Then the adhesive is troweled onto the floor and it is layed in place.
your linoleum flooring installation is near complete and need only be trimmed in now. This is done with a sharp utility knife and most pros may use a hook type blade.
remember for proper linoleum flooring installation in most cases any seams will require professional heat welding.
We know this linoleum flooring installation page may not be quite as informative as some of our other installation pages, but that is because we are trying to be sure to stress that linoleum flooring installation is really better left to the pros. Genuine linoleum material is difficult to work with, it can be brittle and easily broken or cracked PRIOR to being installed and again in most cases requires heat welding. If you really want a genuine linoleum floor and do not wish to hire someone to install it, we suggest you consider linoleum tiles or linoleum click flooring which we will cover more in depth in our linoleum flooring types section.
