Rubber flooring installation can be tricky. The job conditions often cause the method of installing the floor to vary. If you are installing a rubber floor of any type in your home or commercial setting the process will be pretty much the same. The flooring professor will offer general installation guidelines in this section as well as offer more in depth resources for jobsite specific and brand specific instructions.
NOTE***As with any installation advice we offer, We ALWAYS recommend that you familiarize yourself with the manufacturers written instructions before you begin your rubber flooring installation.
It does not matter too much if you are installing rubber tiles, raised disc tile, raised square profile tile, other solid rubber tile, or some sort of solid rubber sheet flooring, rolled rubber flooring, rubber gym flooring, or other rubber sports floors they all install in a similar manner but there are differences so again be sure to consult your manufacturers directions.
All subfloors/substrates must be inspected prior to installation. All substrates must be clean, smooth, permanently dry, flat, and structurally sound before you begin. This Is CRUCIAL to any successful flooring installation project!
Your subfloor should also be free of moisture, dust, sealers, paint, primers, curing compounds, parting agents, residual adhesive, adhesive removers, hardeners, as well as any solvents, wax, oil, grease, asphalt, gypsum compounds, salts, mold, mildew, or any other materials that may inhibit good adhesion.
If you are installing on concrete, as in any flooring installation both a moisture test as well as a ph (or alkalinity test) should be performed prior to installing rubber flooring.
If you are installing on wood floor, be sure you have a smooth plywood subfloor or install an appropriate underlayment prior to installing rubber floors.
Once your sub floor is prepared properly, you are ready to apply adhesive. There are several types of rubber floor tile adhesive, but most commonly they are either acrylic based or urethane/epoxy based. In any case we recommend you ALWAYS use the manufacturers recommended adhesive to complete your rubber flooring installation.
Be sure to also read and understand the manufacturers recommendation for how to apply adhesive, including notch size on the trowel, this is very important to ensure a quality job!
We recommend you allow your rubber floor to acclimate to the room for 48-72 hours to ensure a premium job. inspect your adhesive once it is applied and be sure it is ready to receive rubber tile or rubber sheet flooring. (if you are installing rubber tile be sure to remove from boxes).
We suggest you find the center point of the room and break it into 4 equal "quadrants" start your rubber flooring installation at the corner of one quadrant and work in a pyramid pattern ensuring proper tile alignment and proper adhesive transfer. Check alignment regularly. Your rubber tiles can also be in a staggered configuration or even diagonally for appearance. (but these are much more complicated installations.
Fit tightly together and for rubber rolled flooring or tile be sure to keep any seems at least 6" away from seams in the subfloor. Be sure you have a 100 lb flooring roller and roll the floor upon installation in small sections as you go.
