Another great misconception in our industry is that vinyl flooring is dead. Well, the truth is it was sleeping for a while but it is back! Their are 4 major manufacturers of vinyl flooring in the US and all of them are now offering a nice product mix.
The major manufacturers/brands of quality vinyl flooring are Armstrong, Congoleum, Mannington, and Tarkett. Each of these brands have a wide rang of qualities offered within their product line. We can safely say that each shines above the competition in different ways, and pretty much any of the four offer some premium quality choices that meet our standards. at this point we would use caution with any other brands.
In most cases a premium quality vinyl floor offers better resilience (or impact resistance) than wood and tile flooring. It also offers superior moisture resistance properties to a wood floor, or laminate flooring. Vinyl flooring care and cleaning is of about the same ease as wood with the exception of you have to worry a bit less about getting it too wet.
Here is where many consumers get into trouble and end up very dissatisfied with their final choice. Vinyl flooring like any other flooring product has a very wide range of qualities available and in most cases the advice you will receive from clerks and even commission sales people (with lack of training/experience) will be less than adequate.
That is why we are here to help you! Beware getting caught in the trap of "the best deal" or "wow vinyl is much less expensive than tile, wood flooring, or laminate flooring" Because premium quality vinyl usually isn't that much less, and most people could not install their own vinyl if they wanted to but may tackle a tile, wood or laminate project. Lesson here is once you are armed with the information we will give you, then you can make the right choice and not be misled!
A few years ago vinyl flooring product sales almost came to a screaming halt. Market share was shrinking due to the introduction of the new laminate floors flooding the market, then the availability, popularity, and affordability got far better on both hardwood flooring and tile floors.
Vinyl flooring producers have now found new ways to add texture and very realistic patterns that actually look like their natural counterparts of wood or tile floors. This along with vinyl's ease of maintenance and reasonable affordability have many consumers revisiting this old standby flooring product.
There are four basic types of vinyl flooring, The most commonly known is probably what we in the industry refer to as roto vinyl. This simply means it is a backing with a "picture" that creates the pattern and of course the all important wear layer
